→ Electorate
Electorate
An electorate is for example a community that chooses its public representative. An electorate elects or votes on the politician it thinks would be best suited to represent its ideas and ideals. The electorate may come to a unanimous conclusion or have very differing opinions in various questions, resulting in a tied vote, or worse: a re-election.
An electorate is a conglomeration of different individuals with the right to make themselves heard in the society. A person who is not part of an electorate may not vote, and is therefore basically cast out from society. In the United States, a person cannot vote unless he or she registers with the proper authorities. An illegal alien may not vote either, but almost anyone else is according to the law eligible to vote in public matters of importance to the community.
In the last U.S. presidential election, many people chose not to vote, or did not even know they were allowed to vote. This resulted in a pandemonium of critique against the government, and it was thought it did not do enough to get many people to vote. In the end, George W. Bush (son of former President Bush) walked away with the victory and soon thereafter, the U.S. broke out into war with Afghanistan and Iraq.
In Florida, the electorate faced difficulties when it was discovered that the manner in which it had to cast its vote was severely flawed. The authorities had the people use old mechanical machines to punch holes in the voting ballots, and therefore the outcome of the Florida popular vote was criticized by several dignities.
The electorate itself had little influence over the ballot casting, though a large part of it declared it unsatisfactory.
In some ancient indian tribes, and other old communities, the electorate consisted of the elders in the society. This excluded anyone under a certain age, and most of the time, all females. This system of election and decision making exists even to this day, though it is becoming increasingly uncommon.
The fact that women all the way through to the middle of the 20th century in some societies were not allowed to be part of the electorate, is today considered an atrocity. Women have historically been considered worthy of less than their male counterparts, but when the suffragettes came into existence in the 1920’s, change was just around the corner.
The suffragettes were women who wore red stockings and fought for the right to be included in the community. This of course included the right to cast votes, a right which was soon to be granted to them. Today, there is no official difference between men and women, even though in reality there still exists a great many men who would like to go back to the way things were.
If an electorate behaves badly, its government may at any time decide to take away the right to vote. This has resulted in several communities of the world being run by dictators. In states such as North Korea, Cuba and the Former Soviet Union, an individual backed by a party of like minded people, has seized the power with no intention of giving it back to the voting public (the electorate). In governments such as these, the electorate is instead based on the mind/s of the person/people in charge. This absolves everyone else from responsibility, and leaves the dictator in a very dangerous position.
By seizing all the power he has in effect become the target for outcry from the people (the former electorate) if he decides on things that do not turn out well for the society. Despite this fact, there are numerous men and women in the world who do nothing but long to be a dictator, and who spend all their time plotting to take over the power from its rightful owner, the electorate.
It only goes to show, that dictatorships never work out particularly satisfactorily for the individuals involved, and certainly not for the electorate as a whole.
In Switzerland, all of the citizens are part of the electorate from the time they turn eighteen years old. This is because, in Switzerland, the people vote in all political questions. There, the elected politicians act more like upholders of the law and protectors of the community, than deciders in matters of great importance.
If a member of the electorate, i.e. a member of the Swiss community, does not take part in an election, and cannot show a valid reason why not, he or she is thrown into prison for a fortnight. After an individual has been punished that way, he or she is not likely to repeat their offense. Unless of course, they are leechers, like some people. Leecher is the official word for the people who avoid voting only in order to get thrown into jail and live on the government’s expense.
In conclusion, an electorate may consist of 1 person or many billions of people. If there were a matter of great importance to the whole Earth, the electorate would likely consist of all humans over the age of eighteen years old. An election of that magnitude would require a considerable amount of preparation, but it is believed by several professors that it would indeed be possible.
The worldwide electorate continues to be a thing for the future, but who knows, maybe soon you will be able to vote on matters ranging from global warming to whom should take the position as ruler of the planet.
